Chairman's news, June 2011
The club has had a great start to the season. Both on the court and socially. From a personal point I am thrilled the way the club is developing. Since the May newsletter the club has held the monthly tournament “cheese and wine tournament”. My since thanks to Chris Thomas for organising an excellent night and well supported.
Sue Hinks and her team organised the all day breakfast with plant and nearly new
stalls. This was held on Saturday 21st May. A fantastic day was had by all. Watching
the juniors, was a joy and then the Eagle reds beating Wem mini reds in a match

Club Teams
Club Teams
Ladies
At the beginning of 2011 Chris Thomas stepped down from many successful years as Ladies Captain and Jane Archer stepped down as vice captain. In their place the captain for 2011 is Sarah Constable and vice captain, Sue Hinks
Following on from this change in captaincy a new process was initiated for the selection of team members. A team practice was held on 1st March 2011 and from that the teams were selected. The 1st March had an excellent turnout with all 4 courts being used.
HETC will be putting out 4 ladies teams in this summer league with the 1st Team remaining in Division 1, 2nd Team in Division 5 N, 3rd Team rising into Division 7 and the new 4th Team in Division 8.
There is ladies team coaching every Tuesday evening from 6.30 to 7.30pm until 5th April 2011.
Men In relation to the men’s teams, Andrew Keen remains captain, but the new Vice-
From our June 2011 Newsletter:
Ladies: With the season now underway the teams are progressing well. With a few injuries at the start of the season we have still managed to put the full teams. However, we do have a few matches that need to be covered so if you fancy a game and you are a fully paid full member please do not hesitate to contact Sarah Constable on 07709 000579.
Training is still being offered on Tuesday evenings (for information please contact Laura Oakes). This training is open to all club members and is at a cost of £3 per session.
Beginners: Laura Oakes, Head Coach is holding beginner sessions weekly for those who wish to try out tennis, or simply get back into it.
British Tennis Membership
At present it is free to join British Tennis. One of the advantages of being a member is that the club will be entitled to Wimbledon tickets. Further information is available on the website,

A very successful tournament, in which the final was won by Sue Hinks and Mark Collinge, who beat Sally Price and John Minter, was followed by an equally successful Cheese and Wine party. Many thanks to organiser Chris Thomas and her helpers.
Another excellent tournament: Sally Price and Mark Collinge eventually ran out winners
in a closely fought final. The runners-

The Club was delighted to welcome Greg Rusedski to open our new courts. Greg arrived to find a large crowd of current and previous members, together with a large number of children from High Ercall school who had been given time off with their teachers to attend this auspicious event.
Greg was officially welcomed by Club Chairman Chris Hinks, who then handed over to Club President Anita Bruckshaw. After a few words of thanks to all those who had helped to make the afternoon a success Anita asked Greg to do the honours and cut the ribbon to open the courts.
Greg then spent time on court with our Junior members, as well as autographing shirts and balls.
Also present at the opening ceremony were a number of representatives of the LTA including the Deputy President Cathie Sabin,.
A well attended tournament ended with a victory for Judith Byne and Harry Inman over Annie Bradley and Georgia Ferriday.
An early start on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning; with a glass of Bucks Fizz to help everyone get going. While members battled it out on court Geoff Howarth slaved over a hot barbecue cooking sausages and bacon. Meanwhile in the kitchen, Ann, Natalie, Sally and Jo got everything else ready so that everyone could site down and enjoy their late breakfast/early lunch. The winners of the tournament were Jo Lawson and Sarah Constable who beat Mo Cooper and Sam Price in a closely contested final set. Click here for some pictures.
A bright sunny evening at the Club and another successful tournament organised this time by Ann Constable. In the absence of Club Captain Andrew Keen the Vice Captain David Constable led a team comprising himself & Heather Temperton, Chris Thomas & Margaret Sankey, Sue Hinks & Gilly Cooper and Beryl Collinge & John Minter. Ladies’ Captain Sarah Constable’s team consisted of herself & Annie Bradley, Jane Archer & Geoff Howarth, Judith Byne & Brian Pitts and Natalie McBride & Lucy Walker. For the record, David’s team won by 46 games to 35: an enjoyable evening was had by everyone who took part.
22 players took part in this highly enjoyable handicapped tournament. It took place
on a fine evening at the Club and didn’t finish until 10.00 pm. The winners were

A big thanks to the 14 players and 1 supporter who turned out for the monthly Sunday tournament held on December 4th. Peter Lees devised a ‘Swiss’ (or was it Swedish?) system which ensured everyone had a full morning of tennis with Helen Lees and Brian Pitts finally taking the trophy! The sun gradually disappeared and a chilly wind whipped around the courts so everyone was very happy to finish off with some delicious hot mulled wine and mince pies made by Sue Hinks. Thankyou to Annie Bradley, the organiser.
